Needingworth Baptist Church welcomed their new pastor, Paul Harrison, into the ministry on 31 January. The speaker was Dr Simon Gathercole, Senior Lecturer in New Testament studies at Cambridge University and an elder at the sending church, Eden Baptist in Cambridge.
He spoke to the new pastor and the church from 1 Timothy 3:1-7, reminding them of the vital importance of the qualities Paul speaks of in this passage. Simon also reminded the new pastor that the qualities spoken of are not just to be ticked off and then put away, but are to be preached and applied regularly, because of their continuing relevance.
The service was conducted by Pastor Nigel Graham of Warboys Baptist Church, with testimonies from Paul Burton on behalf of the church as to how they came to call Paul to the pastorate. Paul gave an account of the Lord’s dealings with him, leading him to the pastorate at Needingworth.
Paul worked as a social worker based in Cambridge before studying at London Theological Seminary. He then worked for three years as area evangelist for the Association of Grace Baptist Churches (West Anglia), and then spent five years as a Free Church Chaplain at HMP Blundeston. Paul is married to Liz and they have two children in their 20s, Alice and Sam.
It was a wonderful occasion, attended by about 100 people. A time of refreshments and fellowship followed, with encouraging conversations, which left the church with precious memories of the day.
The fellowship at Needingworth now look forward to being, by God’s grace, a spiritually vibrant, Christ-centred church, witnessing to the surrounding community.
