America’s gay rights campaign group, Human Rights Campaign (HRC), has been stepping up its lobbying while the US Supreme Court heard arguments as to whether gay couples have a constitutional right to marry.
According to online news agency NBC, the HRC conducted a survey among 688 leading US employers. It found that 99 per cent of them already prohibit discrimination on sexual health benefits and 89 per cent offer health benefits to domestic partners.
The US, as with the UK and France, is undergoing a huge political battle over the equalisation of marriage, with some American states embracing it and others completely against it.
In his 2012 re-election campaign, President Barack Obama embraced gay marriage, while Senator Rob Portman recently announced his support for gay marriage after learning his adult son is gay.
