Increasing persecution

Outspoken Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali has told a gathering of politicians and human rights organisation leaders that the influence of Islam and rising secularism are eroding freedom of belief across the world.
Earlier, the former bishop of Rochester, who is now president of charitable organisation Oxtrad, had said Christians needed to do more in their local communities in the West, to prevent themselves from becoming exiles.
He told the gathering that Christians face increasing persecution and hardship in many parts of the world, and recent equality and hate crime legislation is making it more difficult for Christians to express their faith at work or in public, even in the West.
Bishop Michael said it was important for politicians and organisations to put in place measures that would promote protection under the law for Christians and other believers, whether in the East or in the West.
