Carry the Torch
On Saturday 17 September, more than 1000 church leaders and delegated representatives gathered at Wembley stadium for a special day of prayer, called Carry the Torch.
Organised by Hugh Osgood and Jonathan Oloyede, chairman and convenor respectively for Global Day of Prayer London (GDOP), the aim was to gather church leaders from all denominations ‘for a day of united prayer and strategic envisioning for the UK’, especially in the run-up to the Olympics.
A GDOP statement read, ‘We are all aware of the urgency of the hour as this family of nations stands at a crossroads. We know only the merciful intervention of God through the corporate prayers of the saints will turn the tide and pull us from the end of such a dark moral, social and spiritual precipice.
‘We are so grateful to our Father for his mercy and grace towards us in recent years. We want to hear what the Spirit is saying to his church in this season and be inspired and challenged as we pray for the release of his presence through all the mission opportunities that lie ahead in the next few years, including the 2012 Olympics’.
