Nobel awardThe scientists who discovered that the universe was expanding at an ever-increasing rate have been awarded the Nobel Prize for physics.US Saul Permutter received half of the £934,000 prize money, while a team of two other US scientists, conducting similar work during the 1990s, shared the other half. The discovery, during the late 1990s, meant textbooks had to be rewritten. It led to the investigation of ‘dark matter’, describing the energy that caused stars to be torn apart in far-away galaxies. Dark matter is estimated to make up 70 per cent of the universe.
