Pro-life groups have welcomed the ‘life-saving’ decisions made by the current US government, despite pro-choice protests.
During the past 18 months of Republican government in the US, the Mexico City Policy has been reinstated, to prevent US taxpayers from funding abortion clinics overseas.
The government has also overturned the rule that forced states to fund abortion providers with taxpayers’ dollars, and has pledged to push through a 20-week abortion ban bill, to prevent abortions being carried out at 24 weeks, when life outside the womb is medically viable.
In June, the US Supreme Court ruled against government-compelled speech in ‘National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra’. The ruling struck down a California law that forced pro-life pregnancy centres to provide free advertising for the abortion industry and affirmed the government cannot force citizens to express messages with which they disagree.
Campaign group CitizenGo has said: ‘While abortions are illegal in most African countries, abortions are still routinely carried out in foreign-funded clinics. Besides just performing abortions, Planned Parenthood partners with other abortion advocates like IPAS and Marie Stopes in order to lobby for changes in the laws in Africa. That was also being paid for with US taxpayer funds’. However, the new policies have withdrawn funding, which CitizenGo has welcomed.
