Proposals to relax Sunday trading laws

July 2020

The government is considering suspending the Sunday trading laws for one year to boost the economy after the lockdown, according to reports.

But the Labour Party opposes the suggestion, arguing that it won’t help the economy, and it would have a big impact on retail staff.

Labour’s Lisa Nandy said, ‘[Workers] are deeply worried about what this all means for them in terms of time with their families.’

The last attempt to overhaul the rules was in March 2016, when David Cameron’s government was defeated by 317 votes to 286.
