Anti-Jewish attacks

October 2006

There has been a disturbing increase in attacks against Jewish people and property in the UK, according to a cross-party group of MPs. They have called on the government and law enforcement agencies to tackle the issue of anti-Semitism in the UK.
The panel of 14 MPs said the rise had been exacerbated by the situation in the Middle East and a minority of UK Islamist extremists inciting hatred of Jews. Labour backbencher Denis McShane said abuse took ‘classic forms’ such as synagogues being vandalised and school children being spat at and insulted.
The MPs said it was inexcusable that there was not a requirement for all police forces to record anti-Semitic incidents, given that such a duty existed for other racist crimes. They called for an investigation by the Crown Prosecution Service into the low number of charges being brought for anti-Semitic abuse, saying fewer than one in ten incidents resulted in a prosecution
