Several Christian schools in northern Nigeria have been forced to close down following an increase in the number of kidnappings.

Local officials have ordered the closure of 13 ‘vulnerable’ places of education after some 140 staff and students were taken at gunpoint from a Baptist high school in southern Kaduna.

Gunmen stormed Bethel Baptist High School and ‘fired shots sporadically as they kidnapped the students’, said police spokesman Mohammed Jalije.

Kidnappings have increasingly become an issue in Kaduna State since the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok secondary school by Boko Haram Islamist militants in Borno state.
