The rise and decline of evangelicalism in the United States (1967-2017)

There can be no question that something extraordinary was happening spiritually at the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s, just as Evangelical Times was beginning its ministry. Thousands of young people came to Christ, campus ministries exploded with growth, and hundreds of young men flooded into the seminaries. The year 1976 was named ‘The year of the evangelical’ by Time Magazine, and Jimmy Carter, a professed evangelical, was elected president of the United States. Though there was at the same time much hand-wringing over the nation’s moral decline, with the benefit of hindsight we can see that a ‘revival’ of sorts burst on...

Insights into Nicaragua

Our family have lived in Nicaragua for 16 years. We are involved in mission ministry through Christian education. We find this to be difficult, slow, long-term and unconventional, but far-reaching and effective. My wife is a Korean missionary; I am a British missionary; our son is a Costa Rican MK and our daughter a Welsh MK. Being a multicultural family helps in a cross-cultural ministry. But the work and its results are ultimately not ours, but all of God. We pioneered the first Christian school here in 2007 by God’s grace and power. We began with a pre-school and then added one grade each year....

Creation ministry in California

Professor Andy McIntosh of ACM Creation ministries, recently spent several days in the USA. From 8-14 April, he was in California. He writes: This valuable time in California began with a four-day Alpha Omega conference, where creation themes were presented by Andrew Snelling (Answers in Genesis), myself and Randy Gulliuza of Institute of Creation Research. It was a privilege to hear these speakers present their material, as well as take part myself in a range of talks. Meetings were held at the Shashta Bible College and churches in a wide area, reaching down from Redding to Sacramento. Though not large, the seminaries I visited at Shashta...

Argentina

A year ago we had talked with our home church pastor, Mostyn Roberts of Welwyn Evangelical Church, about the possibility of him visiting us in August 2013, to minister the Word of God to various Reformed Baptist churches, with which we have built contacts over the last few years. He gladly accepted the invitation and the church kindly paid his air fare. If you had been with us, you probably you would have been struck by two things, the difference between each church and the churches’ isolation, due to the immense distances we had to cover — 2300 miles.     We drove from our home...

Compassion in Costa Rica

He’s split up fights with street gangs in Costa Rica, but Keith Holder says his most terrifying experience came recently in England. The missionary was awarded an MBE in 2011 for the work he and his wife Joy have done in Costa Rica for the last 20 years.      Keith (63) says, ‘It was a nerve-wracking experience, meeting HM The Queen, even more so than when we were breaking up a knife fight in the shanty towns of Costa Rica. There have been other scary experiences we’ve been through too.      ‘We went to Buckingham Palace to get the award and I was a bit...

Ministering in Brazil

Ministering in Brazil Following a 10-hour overnight flight from Chicago to Sao Paulo, Brazil, my husband (Joel Beeke) and I had a three-hour car ride, half of it through windy, hilly terrain to Lindoia. This was my husband’s third FIEL Conference.     Editora FIEL was begun in 1967 by missionary Richard Denham Jr. Its purpose is to promote the doctrines of grace among ministers in Portuguese-speaking countries, through the translation of Reformed, biblical literature and conferences.     Wonderful growth is evidenced by an ever-widening distribution of books, exponential growth on the web and increased attendance at conferences (1400 two years ago and 2400 this year,...

God’s miracle school

Joyce Gaudern, a retired teacher from Ripon, has visited Nicaragua three times since 2007 and has helped home-school Joshua and Esther, children of Barry and Susana Davis. Barry and Susana are British/Korean missionaries who founded Carazo Christian Academy. Joyce had the privilege of observing the school’s progress first-hand. Carazo Christian Academy (CCA) in Nicaragua, Central America, is a wonderful testimony to God’s faithfulness, power and provision! In 2005 the Lord gave Barry and Susana the vision for a bilingual school, providing high quality Christian education for Nicaraguan children, from three years old right through to college student level. The possibilities for further training are innumerable!...
